As ICC Wales celebrates World Mental Health Day, our Convention Centre Director reflects on the importance of prioritising your mental health and how she uses the unique settings of ICC Wales to find calmness and balance.
“As we recognise World Mental Health Day, I resonate deeply with the importance of this year’s central theme, Workplace Mental Health. As Venue Director of ICC Wales, I must admit that although I try to prioritise my mental health on a daily basis, the stresses and commitments of the day often make it difficult to achieve this goal. Managing the pressures of such a large venue can be overwhelming and as anyone in a fast-paced industry will know, when you are stressed and feel burnout, others around you, whether they are friends, family or colleagues feel this strain too.
However, I’ve discovered a sense of calm in the very place where stress can often arise — the workplace — through Walesness, a concept we initially created for our delegates, but which I now rely on to manage my own well-being.
Being surrounded by 230 acres of ancient woodland is a gift. I often take a moment to step outside for a breath of fresh air or a quiet walk in the woods to reset. The natural beauty here offers a sense of calm, allowing me to find clarity during busy or stressful days. Even within the venue, I take advantage of our Living Lounge to relax, surrounded by greenery. Taking and preparing for meetings here and utilising the space during the busier parts of my day allows me to recharge from daily stress and has given me a sense of escapism without having to leave the venue and the responsibilities of the day.
Walesness is more than just a wellness concept for our delegates—it’s become an integral part of how I manage the pressures of my role. By bringing nature into events, we can all reduce stress and stay focused, which is vital in a high-pressure, dynamic environment.
I’m proud to lead a venue where mental well-being is built into what we do. On this World Mental Health Day, I invite you to experience Walesness for yourself, and see how it can enhance not only your events, but your own well-being too.”
